Arkansas

Arkansas is located in the southern region of the United States. The state shares a border with six other states and the Mississippi River. Little Rock serves as the state’s capital and most populous city.

The word Arkansas comes from the same root as Kansas, and is from the French pronunciation of a Quapaw word meaning “land of downriver people” or “people of the south wind.” Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to reach Arkansas at the end of the 16th century. The state played an important role in the Texas Revolution of 1835-1836 and the Mexican Civil War in 1846.

Arkansas was admitted into the Union as the 25th state in 1836. The state seceded from the Union in 1861 so it could participate in the American Civil War, and was readmitted in 1968 as part of the Military Reconstruction Act. During the 19th Century, construction of railroads in the state helped the population grow. Long a center for slavery and racial tension, the case of Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education brought national attention to the state.
