Atlantic City, New Jersey
Atlantic City is located in New Jersey along the state’s coastal border. The city is well known for its view of the Atlantic Ocean, its boardwalks and casinos. One interesting fact about Atlantic City is that it was a partial inspiration for the very popular board game Monopoly.
Atlantic City has been a resort community since before the 1850’s. It became incorporated on May 1st, 1954 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, which was the same year that the railroad connecting the city to Philadelphia begun to operate. The ease of transportation and closeness to Philadelphia help to increase the popularity of Atlantic City as a tourist area.
Like many resort communities, Atlantic City fell on hard times after World War II. In hopes of returning the city to its past splendor and creating jobs, New Jersey residents voted to legalize gambling in 1976. The owners of the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel then remodeled their building and renamed it the Resorts International. It opened its doors on May 26 1978, making it the first legal casino in the eastern part of the United States.
