Boston, located in the northeast, is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, largest city in New England, and is part of the Cambridge-Boston-Quincy metropolitan area, the 10th-largest metropolitan area in the country.
Boston was founded in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. Boston was the center of many events during the American Revolution, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The city later became a major shipping port and manufacturing center. Boston was home to the first public school, Boston Latin School, the first college, Harvard College, and the first subway system.
In the early 21st Century, Boston became an intellectual, technological and political center. The city also has been facing gentrification issues and rising living expenses since the 1990s.
Boston’s Job Market
Much of Boston’s economy is based on education, medicine, research, finance, technology and biotechnology. In 2004 tourists spent $7.9 billion visiting the city.
Boston’s fastest growing industries include: software publishers, management and technical consulting services, residential care facilities, healthcare and child day care.
