Colorado

Colorado is a state located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, and is also considered a part of Western and Southern America. Denver serves as the capital and most populous city in the state.

What is known today as Colorado has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 13 millennia. The United States acquired part of the Rocky Mountains from France during the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and then relinquished its territory to Spain under the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819. In 1876 Colorado was admitted as the 38th state into the Union.

In 1878 silver was discovered in the state, triggering the Colorado Silver Boom. Colorado was the first state to grant women the right to vote in 1893. Today tourism and high technology have become important parts of the state’s income.

Colorado’s Job Market

Colorado had a total state product of $230 billion in 2006. During the 19th Century the state’s economy changed from mining to agriculture. Colorado’s agricultural products are: cattle, wheat, dairy products, corn and hay. The state also brings in much of its income from energy, and is home to seven of the country’s 100 largest natural gas fields and two of the largest oil fields.

The state also relies heavily on federal government, and is home to NORAD, United States Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, NOAA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Geological Survey, Denver Mint, Buckley Air Force Base, 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, a federal Supermax Prison and many national forests.

The state’s fastest-growing industries include: natural resources and mining, professional and business services, education and health services, leisure and hospitality, other services and government
