Florida

Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean and has a subtropical to tropical climate.

Florida, named by Spanish Conquistador Juan Ponce De Leon in 1513, is the fourth most populous state in the country with a population of more than 18 million people. Tallahassee serves as the state’s capital.

Florida became the 27th state in the nation on Jan. 10, 1981. Until the 20th Century, Florida was the least populous southern state. The state’s economy was able to fully recover from the Great Depression during the buildup to World War II. The climate and low cost of living have since made Florida a popular spot. Florida also is one of nine states that does not impose a personal income tax.

Florida also is known for being home to NASA Merritt Island launch sites, including Kennedy Space Center, on Cape Canaveral, and since 1962 has developed a sizable aerospace industry.

Florida’s Job Market
In 2006, Florida had a gross domestic product of $713.5 billion, with tourism making up the larger part of the state’s economy. The state sees about 60 million visitors each year.
