Hawaii is a state located on an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan and northeast of Australia. Honolulu on the island of Oahu serves as the state’s capital.
The first recorded European contact with Hawaii was by British explorer James Cook in 1778. The area was known as the Republic of Hawaii from 1894 to 1898. It was then annexed to the United States through the Newlands Resolution in 1898. Hawaii was the 50th state admitted into the Union in 1959.
After becoming part of America, Hawaii saw a construction boom and rapidly growing economy. In recent decades, the Hawaiian government has made more of an effort to promote Hawaiian culture.
Hawaii’s Job Market
In 2003 Hawaii had a total gross output of $47 billion. Tourism serves as the most important industry, contributing 24.3 percent of the gross state product. Industrial exports include food processing and apparel. Food exports include: coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, livestock and sugarcane.
The state’s fastest growing industries include: sandalwood, whaling, sugarcane, pineapple, military, tourism and education.
