Houston, Texas is the fourth-largest city in the United States and the largest city in Texas. The city, named after General Sam Houston, then-President of the Republic of Texas, was founded in 1836 by Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen.

Houston is the economic center of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the country with a population of about 5.6 million people.




The booming port and railroad industries, combined with the discovery of oil in 1901, helped the city’s population grow. Houston is known for being home to the Texas Medical Center and NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
