Indiana
Indiana is located in the Midwestern region of the United States. Indiana is bordered by Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south and Illinois to the west. Indianapolis serves as the state capital and largest city.
The name Indiana means “Land of the Indians.” Native Americans may have inhabited the state as early as 10,400 BC. The first European explorers came to Indiana during the 1670s and claimed the territory for France. Following the French and Indian War, the territory came under British control, but was transfered to the United States following the American Revolutionary War. Indiana was admitted as the 19th state into the Union in 1816.
Following its inception into the Union, Indiana nearly became bankrupted when it tried to construct railroads, roads, canals and public schools. The state also played an important role during the American Civil War, after which it began to focus on industrialization. Angel Mounds State Historic Site, one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American Sites, is located in Southwestern Indiana, near Evansville.
