Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, the most populous city in the State of Nevada, is known internationally as a resort city for its gaming, shopping and entertainment. Called “The Entertainment Capital of the World,” the city is famous for its casino resorts, unrestricted availability of alcohol and adult entertainment.

The city was named by Spaniards in the Antonio Armijo party. Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911, and today is the 28th most-populous city in the country. The Las Vegas Strip, where many tourist attractions are located, is technically outside the city limits in Paradise and Winchester.

Las Vegas was a railroad town in the early 1900s. Gambling was legalized in the city in 1931, and in 1946, Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo Hotel opened on what is now The Las Vegas Strip. The building of the Hoover Dam in 1936, the Nevada Test Site in 1951, a 1980 hotel fire at the MGM Grand and the opening of The Mirage in 1989 all played a part in the city’s loss and gain of population.

Las Vegas Job Market

The city receives most of its income from tourist dollars and the establishment of what is now Nellis Air Force Base. In 2006, gambling revenues in Macau Special Administrative Region in the People’s Republic of China surpassed those in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas’s fastest growing industries are: traveler accommodation, education employment services, food service, construction and healthcare.
