Los Angeles is the largest city in the State of California and the second-largest city in the country. An alpha world city, Los Angeles is located in southern California, and is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populous and one of the most diverse counties in the United States.

The city was founded in 1781 by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821, and was purchased as part of the Treaty de Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, making it part of the United States. It officially became a state in 1850.

Los Angeles is considered to be a world center for culture, technology, media, business and international trade, as well as a leader in producing popular entertainment. In 1984, the city hosted the Summer Olympic Games for the second time.
