Maine
Maine is a state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, New Hampshire to the southwest, Quebec, Canada to the northwest and New Brunswick, Canada to the northeast. Maine is the northernmost state in New England and the easternmost state in the country. Augusta serves as the state capital.
The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by a French party, which included Samuel de Champlain. American and British armies fought over the territory during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Maine became the 23rd state in 1820 and joined the Union in 1821. The origin of the name Maine is unknown, though most believe it comes from the ancient French province of Maine or is a reference to the mainland.
Today Maine is a destination for many tourists and outdoor recreation. The state also is known for its naval shipbuilding and construction industries. Maine is home to Bath Iron Works and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
