Minneapolis, which is the capital of Minnesota, is located on the bank of the Mississippi River and has over 20 different bodies. The city was named by its first schoolmaster, who took the Dakota word for water, mni, and combined it with the Greek word for city, polis. The city’s use of hydropower earned it the title of “the greatest direct-drive waterpower center the world has ever seen” between 1880 and 1930.
Voted one of the 50 greenest cities in America by Popular Science, Minneapolis is also the literate city in the country. In addition this, the city is a publishing center which made it a great place for the largest literary and book arts center in the U.S., called Open Book. It’s made up of the Loft Literary Center, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Milkweed Editions, a large independent nonprofit literary publisher.
