New Mexico
New Mexico is located in the southwestern region of the United States. The state is mostly covered by mountains and desert, and is the sixth-most sparsely inhabited state in the country. New Mexico has a unique mix of Spanish, Mexican and American Indian cultural influences. Santa Fe serves as the state capital, while Albuquerque is the largest city.
The first known inhabitants of New Mexico were members of the Clovis culture of Paleo-Indians, followed by Native Americans of the Mogollon, Anasazi, Navajo, Apache and Ute cultures. Europeans didn’t come to the state until the 1500s. A part of New Spain, New Mexico became part of independent Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. After the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico ceded its territory and in Compromise of 1850 Texas ceded its portion of the state. New Mexico was admitted into the Union in 1912 as the 47th state.
During World War II atomic bombs were designed and manufactured at Los Alamos and tested at Trinity site. Today the state benefits from government spending, and is home to Kirtland Air Force Base, Holloman Air Force Base, Cannon Air Force Base, White Sands Missile Range, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.
New Mexico’s Job Market
