Oklahoma

Oklahoma is located in the South Central region of the United States and is the 28th most-populous state and the 20th-largest state in the country. The majority of the state lies within the Great Plains and the U.S. Interior Highlands, which are notorious for bad weather conditions. Oklahoma City serves as the state’s capital and largest city. Of the state’s residents, about 60 percent live in the metropolitan areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

The name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning “red people.” It is thought that native peoples traveled through Oklahoma as early as the last ice age. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, a Spanish explorer, traveled through the area in 1541, but French explorers claimed the state in the 1700s and in remained under French rule until 1803, when the land was purchased by America as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

In the 1830s, many Native Americans were moved to Oklahoma from other states on the Trail of Tears, and the area was designated Indian Territory by the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Indian Intercourse Act of 1834. By 1890, more than 30 tribes were given federal land in the state. Eventually, portions of Native American land were opened for purchase by settlers and companies under the Dawes Act in 1887 and the Land Run of 1889.

Eventually, Oklahoma was formed from the Indian Territory and became the 46th state to enter the Union in 1907. During the early to mid-1900s, Oklahoma was home to race riots, poor farming practices, drought and high winds. In 1995, Oklahoma was the scene of the Oklahoma City Bombing, which killed 168 people.
