South Carolina

South Carolina is located in the southern region of the United States. It is bordered by North Carolina to the north, Georgia to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Columbia serves as the state capital and largest city.

The state was named in honor of King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland. The original colony was settled by English settlers and French Huguenots. The Carolinas split into two in 1712. The Yamasee War from 1715-1717 was one of the country’s bloodiest Indian wars. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in 1860 and founded the Confederate States of America. The state played a large part in the American Revolution and American Civil War.

During the early 20th Century, South Carolina was known for its textile industry. The state moved its agricultural base from cotton to more profitable crops, attracted large military bases and created tourism industries.
