Tucson, Arizona

Often referred to as “The Old Pueblo”, Tucson, Arizona is the 32nd largest city and 52nd largest metropolitan area in the United States and the site of the University of Arizona. The city’s name basically translates to “at the base of the black hill”.The area was most likely first inhabited by Paleo-Indians, which were believed to have been where the city is located as long as 12,000 years ago. Jesuit Missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino later founded the mission San Xavier del Bac in 1692 around 7 miles upstream from where the original settlement was founded.

In the early 1900’s, Tucson was the largest city and commercial area in Arizona. During the 1920’s and 30’s Phoenix surpassed Tucson, but the city has continued to increase in size and population, but at a much slower speed. Now the city is also home to many festivals and events.

It was also give a gold rating in regards to its level of friendliness to bicyclist by the League of American Bicyclists in April 2007. The city hosts one of the largest events in the sport in the country called “El Tour de Tucson.”

Tucson’s Job Market

Tucson’s fastest growing jobs are: Veterinary technologists and technicians, pharmacy technicians, audio and video equipment technicians, network systems and data communications analysts, postsecondary teachers, dental hygienists, personal and home care aides, health educators, social science research assistants and home health aides.

The fastest growing industries are: natural resources and mining, educational services and healthcare services, tourism, leisure and hospitality.

High wage occupations are: Airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers, anesthesiologists, internists (general), obstetricians and gynecologists, orthodontists, pediatricians (general), physicians and surgeons, psychiatrists, dentists (all other specialists) and chief executives
