Virginia Beach is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Currently the city is the largest city in the state and the 40th largest in the country.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, Virginia Beach has the longest pleasure beach in the world, which has caused it to be a very popular resort city. Because of the large number of visitors, Virginia Beach has a thriving tourism industry. On top of this, in 2006 Money Magazine voted the area as the 6th Best Big City in the country to live in.

The area was first inhabited by the Chesepian native tribe. Englishmen first landed at the beach on April 26, 1607, although it was not until around 1622 that anyone settled near by. Virginia Beach did not become and independent city until 1952.
