Washington

Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Washington is bordered by Canada to the north, Idaho to the east, Oregon to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Olympia serves as the state capital while Seattle is the most populated city.

The state is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. Spanish Captain Don Bruno de Heceta was the first European to land in Washington in 1775. In 1836 Missionary Marcus Whitman established missions in the state, which later helped with the formation of the Oregon Trail. Washington was admitted into the Union as the 42nd state in 1889. During World War II the state became a center for war industries, including products from the Boeing Company.

For a long time, Tacoma was known for its treatment of gold, silver, copper and lead ore. During the Great Depression Washington built a series of hydroelectic dams, including the Grand Coulee Dam in 1941, which is the country’s largest concrete structure. In 1980 the northeast face of Mount St. Helens exploded, killing 57 people and flooding into the Columbia River.

Washington’s Job Market

In 2005 Washington had a total gross product of $268.5 billion. The state has significant amounts of trade with Asia through Puget Sound. It is one of only seven states to not collect a personal income tax and also does not collect a corporate income tax or franchise tax. Washington also is known for its agricultural production. The state ranks first in the nation in production of: red raspberries, wrinkled seed peas, hops, spearmint oil, apples, sweet cherries, pears, peppermint oil, concord grapes, carrots for processing and Niagara grapes.

The state’s fastest-growing industries include: manufacturing, information technology, leisure and hospitality and tourism.
